Steel Japan Katana

Steel Japan Katana
How do i clean/Restore Rusted Carbon Steel Japanese Katana sword?

I have a carbon Steel Sword from WW2 era that my dad got when he was in japan. IT has some rust on it and i was looking for a safe way to clean/Restore it. I can’t seem to find anywhere in my area to take it to get it done. Using steel wool and metal scrub like for a grill is considered the worst thing for it. If anyone can help suggest anything i would really appreciate it! i live in the central Florida area.

Noooooo!!! You don’t! LOL That was the first reaction I had when I saw the “clean” and “japanese katana” in the same question.

Anything done that is not completed by a professional will completely destroy any sort of value. You are much better off leaving it alone. Some light oil on the blade only would be the only thing you would want to do. No cleaning whatsoever. As an Antique Sword collector I have have acquired some Japanese swords in the past where the previous owner thought they should clean it up. A sword that should have sold for $1500 or more (that is obviously not always the case though) I was only able to get $200 for it.

Send me some pictures via my email address in my profile here and I would be happy to offer you further suggestions on caring for the sword.
