is it illegal to own a Japanese hand-forged sword in the U.S. without a certificate?

I have learned it is illegal to own one in Japan without a certificate of some kind, but I need to know if this is true in the U.S. too.
Good, good, I own many swords myself, but I have been offered a deal on a new blade from a smith in Japan, so I had to make sure there would be no troubles here in the U.S. before I accepted the offer.

There are no limits on owning knives or swords in the US.
