If you buy a katana in Japan, will they allow you to export it back to the U.S? And how much will it cost?

Yes, but it will take some time. You need to take the sword to the Art and Craft Section of the Cultural Agency, fill out some forms, and apply for an export permit at the same time. As far as I can tell, the forms and permit shouldn’t cost much. The permit takes at least two weeks though, so it might not work if you’re personally coming to Japan to buy it. As far as shipping goes, you can send it using the Japan Postal Service. Shipping varies upon the size of the box it comes in, as well as insurance options and speed of delivery.
