How can you tell if a Damascus Blade is real?

Ive heard a lot of sources say that not all Damascus Steel is of the same quality. Some are cheaper and easier to make while the real stuff is a lot nicer and more expensive. Is this true? Are some damascuss steel blades different than others and if so does there quality differ also?

The reason I’m wondering is because i’ve got my eye on one in a store that looks really nice. Its a bowie design, with an antler handle and a brass hand guard. Its really nice and everything looks authentic. It even has a sticker that says that it was made in pakistan. How can you tell if its actually real? Id like to know before i buy it. What do you think?

True Damascus steel is older than dirt, to start with-I’m not exactly sure about the exact dating, but I know it’ll be older than 300 years at least, as was stated above.

Also, if you look at the blade with a jeweler’s loupe, you will see a wavy, watery looking pattern on the steel. The pattern should be only slightly darker than the surrounding metal, and the light will reflect from it differently. (If you ever see it just once, you’ll never forget it-it’s beautiful!)

I doubt that the blade you’re looking at is real. Generally speaking, antique blades don’t come with stickers.
