Sharp Steel
I have a Stainless Steel straight razor that i can not get sharp enough to shave with. Any ideas?
To sharpen a straight razor, do not use a coarse stone unless the blade has nicks or is severely damaged. For an undamaged blade, typically all that is needed is to hone the edge and then use a strop.
When honing the edge, you must be careful to not rock the blade. You want to push the edge along the hone to smooth the edge and remove only a very small amount of metal.
A leather belt makes a good strop. If you have seen some old cowboy movies, the barber just drags the razor across the leather strap (strop) to put the razor edge on the blade. Stropping does not remove metal, but smooths the irregularities on the surface. Typically you strop the blade before shaving, and if the beard is tough, once or twice while shaving.
