Saya Katana Sword
Saya Katana Sword

Does anyone know how to fix a saya so the blade doesn’t jiggle in it?
I recently bought a new katana have a problem with the fact that the blade jiggles around in the lower part of the saya. The top portion of the saya holds the blade well enough that you can’t shake the blade loose from the saya but when you move around you can here the blade jiggling around in the lower portion of the saya. I need to know of an easy way to fix this problem without inhibiting the drawing of the sword.
As long as the sword is held adequately by the tension of the habaki in the koiuchi, then the sword and saya are correct. If you bounce around the sword tip will bounce around in the saya. There is nothing wrong with this and it isn’t a problem. In fact there is a need for this space around the blade.
Interference between the blade and saya would wear out the saya and could scratch the blade (at around $100/inch to polish you don’t want any extra scratches), and there is a small pocket at the end of the saya where excess oil, water, etc. can drain off the blade and collect (another protective aspect of the saya for the blade). Anything actually touching the blade inside the saya is a potential point for accumulating dirt or moisture that will rust the blade, so contact between the blade and saya is kept to a minimum.
