How can I tell if a sword is quality or shit?
Tomarrow I am going to a flee market with the intent of purchasing a few swords. (This flee market has tons of sword dealers).
How can I tell if a sword is high or poor quality? I would like a sword that is battle ready. The swords wont really do anything besides hang on my wall, but if I’m spending the money I want quality swords.
The swords there are cheap. You can get them for anywhere from 10-300 dollars. Obviously I know the more I spend the better it will be. I also don’t really trust the dealers because its a flee market and they will tell me what I want to hear to get it sold.

I’m looking at katanas more then anything.
The basic answers is that usually anything under $100 is most likely Carbon Steel (also called buttersteel to swordfighters) and wil chink horribly when used. The best way is to ask the seller what kind of steel was used, stainless or Spring Steel is usually battle ready. If you want a cheap starting sword, carbon steel is still an option, but make certain the weapon is a Full Tang. This means the blade extends all the way to the pommel of the weapon. Anything less runs the risk of snapping in a spetacular fashion on the field. Unfortunatly you have to rely a lot on the seller’s honesty when buying a blade.
