Last Samurai Katana
I got a sword and was wondering about oiling it?
I recently accuried a sword (The Last Samurai Katana replica). I was told that it should be oiled to keep it in good condition, however I don’t know what to use. Also, because I am a novice sword collector, I don’t know if there are any other “housekeeping” items I should be worried about with it. Any help is greatly appreciated.
Samurai Swords (nihonto) are traditionally oiled with choji oil. Choji oil is a mineral oil mixed with clove oil and can be purchased from Martial Arts supply stores that carry sword equipment.
Lacking choji you can oil Your Sword with mineral oil.
Now if you don’t intend to use the sword (and I suggest you don’t, most swords on the market are not safe to use as anything other than decoration and never use it without proper instruction) then you would be better off using a micro-crystaline wax such as Museum Wax on the blade to protect it. The wax lasts much longer.
