How would the Templar Knights travel from London to Jerusalem in the middle of the First and Second Crusades?
I am writing a novel about the Templar Knights and wondered how they would have travelled from London to Jerusalem.
Would they have shipped to France and then walked through Europe to Jerusalem or would they have shipped from London, gone through the Mediteranian and to Jerusalem that way?
I also want to know how long both trips would have taken.

Depending on the location of nations, they would have engaged in different actions when marching towards Jerusalem. The most common form of transport for The Knights Templar and crusading English forces would have been fleets of Galley (a type of boat). They would depart London and sail down the West coast of Portugal, traveling to a major port, usually in Sicily. Here they would re-stock on essential supplies (food,water plus other resources), and rest.
An interchange with another vessel would take place and then they would continue their journey to the Middle-East.
There is little doubt in my mind that the Middle-Eastern ocean was very dangerous on some occasions and heavily defended, and so it is quite possible ships would dock in Greece, particularly near the Byzantine city of Constantinople where it was secure and easy to deploy troops. However they would need to move through Turkey to reach their objective. The First Crusade that was ordered by Pope Urban the II in 1095, took this route and over half the participants perished from the harsh desert landscape, before the holy lands were set foot upon.
In your novel it really depends on which one you think is more realistic – it doesn’t really matter, in fact choosing one idea might give you the ability to add extra detail and events. Whichever one interests you most, they are both acceptable.
