Ok, so I will chime in here because some people well….
It was a Katana, or properly a katakatana.
Hattori Hanzo- Tarantino was a huge fan of Sonny Chiba (the guy who played Hattori Hanzo,)
Tarantino was a particularly huge fan of the old “Shadow Army” T.V. series that in which Sonny Chiba starred as you guessed it “Hattori Hanzo”.
So he got the name from the T.V. series that Sonny Chiba used to be in and got Sonny Chiba to play that part. One of those Tarantino-esque type of deals.
