Katana Sword Can
Katana Sword Can

Where can i get the sharpest sword/katana?
i was wondering where can i get the sharpest swords/katana available?, i need them for experiments of course not chopping poeple up
Just to go into detail about the sword… Avoid stainless at all cost if you are doing edge retention/cutting tests. No matter what they say (Forged High Carbon stainless! Cryo-treated 420! XP), stainless steels are inferior in hardness and carbon distribution as compared to, say, 1050 carbon. But just as stainless and carbon steels are different, so are the different carbon steels. 1065 is one of the closest steels they have found in relation to traditional tamahagane…however, it is far less resilient than D2 (And less expensive for that matter…).
Next you have forge process. A through tempered blade will be very tough and sharp, but for durability…they are less than stellar. Being super-hardened the whole way through, the blade becomes more brittle. Spring tempered is better for durability, as it will flex and spring back to true. It is less likely to snap. The drawback, however, is that the edge is flexible as well. On harder targets like bamboo, you won’t be able to get the same bite that you would with a hardened edge.
The way you want to go is a forged, differentially hardened blade. Many companies have a controlled hardness ratio of 60/40 hrc edge/back, or something close. This is good, because with a Rockwell rating of 60, the ha (sharpened edge) is hard enough to hold the incredible edge these swords are known for with the biting power they need. The core and spine at 40 gives it flexibility to absorb the shock of sudden contact with the target.
Forge-folding isn’t really all that necessary anymore, because all it was originally used for was to distribute carbon throughout the steel and throw out impurities. The hada (grain from folding) was a byproduct, and is basically just aesthetic these days. With modern technologies, we can produce steels with near perfect carbon distribution and almost no impurities. The only exception to this rule is the forge-folding of two or more different carbon steels…but this doesn’t seem to do as much as many people think.
Now, for the where…
Oni Forge is a great company. Their swords are proven cutters, they are strong, and the steel quality control is superb. Not to mention the fact that their people are knowledgeable and friendly. Mr. Graves has a gem. They are my choice.
Next, Last Legend has some great blades as well, but the wait for them borders on rediculous…no offense meant to LL. They are a good company with good people, too.
My other main choices would be Hanwei (Paul Chen) and Cheness (Paul Chen…A different Paul Chen. LOL. Coincidence? …Probably…) Both companies have well forged swords… with Hanwei having some real lookers, and Cheness having an absolutely great variety.
Bugei would be great as well, but the price tag is almost as dangerous as their swords are sharp!
The last thing I want to say, is this:
I sure hope you don’t intend to try to cut rocks, statues, trees, cars, etc… It would make me sad. All blades deserve respect, especially if they have had time and effort poured into their creation. So long as you don’t try something rediculous like that, LET ME KNOW HOW THE EXPERIMENTS WENT!! I’m always interested in new info. ^_^
Hope this helps.
