Imperial Japanese Samurai
Imperial Japanese Samurai

Did japan really bring people from other countries to train the japanese solidiers like in the Last Samurai?
In the last samurai, Japan brought in forgein officials (such as people from the US) to train the imperial army during the time of meiji restoration. Did that actually happen during the real meiji restoration, or was it just made up for the movie?
People said the model of Nathan Algren in the film was this French officer Jules Brunet.

He was a member of the French military mission to be sent to Japan in order to help modernize the armies of the shogunate. When the government of shogunate surrendered to the Emperor, he and Corporal Andre Cazeneuve joined a rebel army which resisted new government.
After the Meiji Restoration, Imperial Japanese Army was trained by French officers at first, still. But, after Franco-Prussian War, the Imperial Japanese Army changed its advisers from French to German, as above poster said.
The Imperial Japanese Navy was trained by Royal Navy from first. (They had been never influenced from Germany).
