The two-tailed Bohemian lion?
The Coat of Arms of the Czech Republic includes a lion with a double tail. This ancient heraldic animal seems to have originated in the shield of the Kingdom of Bohemia, and was introduced way back in 1249 by King Ottokar II according to sources I’ve found.
By nowhere can I find the origin of this strange animal. Was there ever a real two-tailed lion? Is it just symbolic? What does it mean?
All information gratefully received.
I also thought there must have been some mythical creature (I doubt the existence of a real one) which served as a model, but have you seen this entry that states it was the artist’s imagination that introduced the two-tailed lion into heraldry:
The tail also may be forked (queue fourchée) or doubled (double-queued); in the arms of the kingdom of Bohemia, the forked tail originally was an artist’s flourish, but later became a distinctive and essential detail of the coat of arms.
