Case Real Blade
Balisongs — are blunt ones legal where they are normally considered illegal?

Yes. The title’s already explained my question.

I’ve lately been having a massive interest in them and want to know if this could be the case. I live in California and I’m aware that the law is that real butterfly knifes are only considered legal when the blade is 2 inches or shorter. No, I don’t plan on killing anyone with them. If you must know, I want to learn the art of flipping.

Thank you all very much in advance!
To clarify, I mean “blunt ones” as in “the blunt ones that trainers use.”

As a martial artist living in CA with an active interest in traditional weapons, I have to say it probably is illegal. CA tends to write its weapons statutes pretty broadly. For instance, rubber nunchucks are technically illegal. However, police only seem to enforce those laws if you are carrying in public or they have it out for you. I’ve been in plenty of dojo’s where illegal weapons were displayed and cops were students and no one said a word.

As a practical matter, as long as you keep it at home, there really isn’t much chance of getting arrested for it.

PS have fun with your balisong. Flipping them is kinda great. I learned on a sharp one and have scars on knuckles still 25 years later.
